The repertoire covers are wide variety of styles, and includes a deal of simple music and also music that treble choirs can still use back in their schools. Traditionally Brightest and Best has between 300 and 400 singers and in the completed interior of St John’s Cathedral, is indeed an amazing experience. We hope you will join us.

The Music

Music is available once you register, and while the event must be self-prepared (in terms of notes and familiarity with the music) by the individual schools and students, the first rehearsal is considered something of a come-and-see-how-it-all-fits rehearsal, for which your choir might not necessarily be expected to be well prepared.

O Come O Come Emmanuel
(with brass)

Arr Robert Boughen

Commissioned for this festival, the work will fully utilize the grand cathedral organ with a brass ensemble at the other end of the building, playing as the massed choir assembles, then to join in a stupendous setting of this ancient plainsong hymn

manuscript

Christmas

In Dulci Jubilo
(with brass)

Praetorious

4 part choir antiphonally with 4 part brass, just as in St Mark’s Venice

cpdl

Epiphany

Brightest and Best

Malcolm Archer

As used in our very first Brightest and Best. Originally for SSA choir, treble choirs can use this as often as mixed voice choirs

Mayhew

Lent

The Lord is my Shepherd

Arr. Archer

Another one suitable for massed choirs or treble choirs, and with a simple yet gorgeous accompaniment. Use it for Anzac Day, weddings, funerals and any other occasions back at school or where your choir might be asked to sing.

Mayhew

Easter

Hallelujah Chorus

Handel

Such sport to sing – every student has to sing this sometime before they leave school, so why not this year at Brightest and Best

cpdl

Pentecost

If Ye Love Me

Tallis

The is the simple end of the gorgeous a capella style of the Renasissance. Have them learn music history while they sing

cpdl

All Saints

For All the Saints
(with brass)

Arr Boughen

Thrilling in the extreme, and occasionally poignant, this straight-forward hymn comes to live as never before with a masterful brass arrangement by Robert Boughen

manuscript

Encore

Shout Glory

Smith

Yet another Gospel composition to allow the massed voices free reign in the cathedral acoustic

Associated Activities

  1. 2008 COMPOSITION COMPETITION

As mentioned in last year’s B&B information package, there will be a composition competition associated with the 2008 Festival where students will be invited to compose an a Capella or accompanied (by pipe organ and / or brass instruments) choral piece for mixed choir (SATB).

The winner of this competition will receive prize money of $250.00 and may have their composition performed by the Alumni choir at the festival. Please encourage your students to become involved in this new Brightest & Best venture.

  2. THE ALUMNI CHOIR

Traditionally we have a guest choir at Brightest and Best, in part to encourage student singers to understand more about the possibilities for singing in choirs after they leave school. This year we intend to form an ALUMNI CHOIR to perform as our guests, and also to put these former students in touch with the RSCM and the amazing Summer School (with Canadian Toni Funk) being planned for January 2009.  Participation fee is $16.00 and alumni will be able to keep the music.

    Who can join?

    - Any singer who has sung in Brightest and Best in the past
    - Any singer who used to sing in your school choir
    - Any singer of post-secondary age who might wish to
    - Teachers, Choir Directors and others who would like to sing rather than conduct for a change.
    - There is no age limit for this choir.

Where do we find these singers?

We are relying on YOU to place this information before such people for whom you might have contact details. They should register their interest by emailing Alex Dixon ((adixon@wmac.com.au or phone 38134592) and including their name, phone number and vocal part. Then all they have to do is turn up at the rehearsals at St Peters Lutheran College chapel (Lohe Street Indooroopilly). Registrations close Tuesday April 1st
